PHYSICAL EDUCATION

   Miss Debra Lickley

Mr. William Dillion

Welcome the Physical Education departments website. This year we will see all classes twice a week.  During this time you will learn the basics of your favorite sports, as well as learn about new, exciting activities and sports. Come to class with enthusiasm and you will have fun and get fit in no time!

Please see below for class rules and regulations.

Dress code: Students are encouraged to dress appropriately for physical education class. Sweat pants, shorts, sweat suits, tee shirts, sweatshirts, and sox with sneakers are all excellent examples of athletic attire.  Students who wear sneakers and are not “dressed appropriately” are still allowed to participate in physical education, but shall receive a lower grade than those students who are properly dressed for activity.

Grading Policy: Students receive a satisfactory (S) or needs improvement (N) grade for physical education during each of the four marking periods.  To receive an S, students need to be prepared for participation (wearing sneakers) for each class.  The only way a student can receive an N in physical education is to wear inappropriate footwear repeatedly or exhibit behavior deemed inappropriate for class. Students also receive an effort and conduct grade each term. A student’s effort grade is influenced by his/her dress during class. Students shall receive a 4 in effort if they are “dressed appropriately” at least 75% of the total classes. Any student who is dressed less than the required 75% shall receive a 3 in effort for the term. The effort grade is lowered one number grade if the student comes to class with inappropriate footwear twice during the term. This is the most common reason for a student to receive a 1 or 2 in effort. The conduct grade is influenced by class behavior. If a student refuses to participate or if he/she violates class or school rules, his/her conduct grade shall be affected. In some cases, a student may receive zero points for class due to misbehavior. Each zero for behavior lowers the conduct grade one number for the term. A student who receives a 1 in effort or conduct shall receive an N grade for the term.

Jewelry Policy: The wearing of jewelry, of any kind, is prohibited during physical education classes in the Agawam Public Schools. The Agawam School Committee instituted this policy several years ago.  The only types of jewelry allowed during class are medical alert necklaces and bracelets to identify those students with medical conditions to emergency medical personnel. A parent/guardian note is necessary to excuse a student from class when he/she has a new piercing that cannot be removed. The physical education department recommends that students wait until the summer to get their piercing so that they don’t miss out on physical education classes.

Excuses:  Parents/guardians may excuse their students from class for two consecutive classes. Any injury or illness that requires the care of a physician should be reported in writing to the school nurse Mrs. Denise Nostin RN. A Medical clearance note is required on the students’ return to physical education after the students’ recovery from the treating physician.

We look forward to having a great year with you!
