| Welcome to the Agawam Junior High School. We want to familiarize you with some of the extra-curricular activities and events that occur at your new school. Listed in this pamphlet are brief descriptions of events, clubs, classes, and contests in which you may choose to participate during the school year. Magazine Drive: The major fund raising event of the school year. Organized by the PTO, it is open to grades seven and eight. Money raised is used for assemblies and other student activities. Student Cadre: The Student Cadre is a volunteer organization of the junior high school. Its membership consists of approximately five students whose primary responsibility is to help in the orderly flow of traffic through school corridors (i.e., hall monitor). Ski Club: Weekly trips to a local ski area begin after holiday vacation. Ski club is open to seventh and eighth grade students. Cost varies from year to year. Rental equipment and ski instruction are available. Non-User’s Club: The non-user’s club was formed to give recognition to those students willing to take a stand against the use of alcohol and other drugs. Club activities include the video-extravaganza and various planned activities. Band: Award winning group open to all students but, more specifically, to those with some experience in instrumental playing. Those with no previous background will be accepted after consultation with the band director. A.J.H.S. also has a jazz band. Chorus: Available to all interested seventh and eighth grade students. Performs concerts throughout the school year. Major events are holiday and spring concerts. Drama Club: Beginning in January, interested students in grades seven and eight may audition for a part in the spring play. Drama club performances take place during the school day for students and teachers, and in the evening for parents and teachers. Intramural Sports: Through the use of our daily bulletin and announcements, students will receive information on any intramural program that may be offered at Agawam Junior High School. Soccer in the fall and softball in the spring are examples of last year’s intramural sports. Seventh and eighth grade students are welcome to participate. Honor Roll: Students who receive all subject grades of “B” or above on their report cards are recognized for their achievement. Fitness Awards: Conducted in physical education classes. The physical education department also gives “Student of the Month” awards. Details given in P.E. classes. Yearbook: Seventh and eighth grade students may participate on the yearbook committee. Every junior high school students’ picture appears in the yearbook. Computer Lab: Open to seventh and eighth grade students. Teachers may take classes to the computer lab for lessons throughout the school year. Student Store: Open to all students during lunch periods on Tuesday and Thursday. Students may purchase various school supplies such as pens, pencils, erasers, and white out. Chess Club: Chess Club is open to all students and meets regularly after school throughout the school year. Art: The junior high school art program conducts several events such as; “students of the month” from Sept.-June in both seventh and eighth grades and the annual spring art show in cooperation with the Music Dept. Writers Club: This club is open to any interested seventh or eighth grade student who enjoys writing short stories and poems. Each year the club publishes a journal of student writings. Library: The library is open from 7:55 to 2:15 Monday through Thursday. It closes at 2:15 on Fridays. After school hours are 2:15 until 2:50 on Wednesday. There are computers available for research and word processing. Student of the Month: This award is sponsored by Dave’s Soda and Pet Food City and the Agawam Junior High School PTO. Students of the month are eligible to receive a $50.00 savings bond. Student Handbooks: Every student who enters Agawam Junior High School will receive a student handbook/agenda. Please read the handbook to learn more about your new school. Good Deeds Program: Staff members who observe random acts of kindness by students toward others frequently reward such behavior with a “Good Deeds Ticket”. This ticket may be redeemed during the students’ lunch period for an ice cream dessert. At the end of the school year a drawing of all Good Deeds students is held and those students whose names are drawn will win a Barnes & Noble gift certificate, movie passes or a similar prize. Perfect Attendance: Each student achieving this benchmark during a report card term (no absences, tardies or dismissals) will receive a ticket to redeem for a small reward. These students are then entered into a drawing for an opportunity to win a Barnes & Noble gift certificate, movie passes or a similar prize. Millionaire Readers Club: The goal for every junior high school student is to read at least 1,000,000 words per year. Students will track their reading, submit forms to verify their reading, and receive awards as they progress towards this milestone. Millionaire readers will receive additional rewards once they meet and surpass this goal. Principal’s Forum: Students will have the opportunity to meet with Mr. Robbins and Mr. Donovan to share their insights into school and discuss issues affecting them. This group will meet periodically throughout the year and is open to anyone interested in attending.
