STUDENT CONDUCT

The right to an education and the basic civil rights afforded students under the United States Constitution and :Federal and state laws form the basis for School Committee governance of student responsibilities in school.

The students in the Agawam school system will be expected to conduct themselves in such a way that the rights and privileges of others are not violated. They shall be required to respect constituted authority, to conform to school rules and regulations, and to those provisions of law which apply to the conduct of minors.

Any of the following actions shall subject a student to notification of parents, suspension, expulsion, or other disciplinary measures:

1.    Intentionally causing or attempting to cause damage to school property; or stealing or attempting to steal school property of value.

2.    Intentionally causing or attempting to cause damage to private property; or stealing or attempting to steal private property.

3.    Intentionally causing or attempting to cause physical injury to another person.

4.    Knowingly possessing or transmitting any firearms, knife, explosive, or other dangerous object of no reasonable use to the student at school.

5.    Knowingly possessing, using, transmitting, or being under the influence of any narcotic drug, hallucinogenic drug, amphetamine, barbiturate, marijuana, alcoholic beverage, or intoxicant of any kind.

6.    Knowingly using or copying the academic work of another and presenting it as his/her own without proper attribution.

7.    Repeatedly and intentionally defying the valid authority of supervisors, teachers, or administrators.

8.    Smoking in any area of the school building or school grounds.

9.    Physically or verbally assaulting a principal, assistant principal, teacher, teacher's aide or other educational staff member on school premises or at school-sponsored or school related events including athletic games.

Massachusetts's law specifically requires that students be made aware of the adopted policies of the School Committee which affect their behavior and its consequences. Therefore, the above listed prohibited actions will be printed in handbooks and other publications and made available to students.
