ASSIGNMENT OF STUDENTS TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
The Agawam School Committee endorses the neighborhood school concept which shall mean that students will attend the school located within the boundary lines of where their home is located. In order to insure equalized educational opportunity, class size should be balanced. To accomplish this, four elementary districts have been established. Students who live within the prescribed limits of their neighborhood school will walk to and from their school.
The only exceptions to the above will be as follows:
• Students may be transferred from one elementary school to another in order to keep class size from becoming too large.
• Students who are repeating a grade may be transferred to another school.
• A student who changes residence to another district within the City during the school year may be allowed to complete the year at his/her present school if a parent or guardian signs a waiver releasing the Agawam School Committee from any obligation to provide transportation and responsibility for the student while commuting to and from school.
• At the sole discretion of the Superintendent of Schools, students may attend an elementary school outside of their neighborhood. The reason must be compelling and discussed on an individual basis with the Superintendent, with notification to the School Committee.
