KINDERGARTEN

The purpose of kindergarten is to develop emotional, social, physical, and intellectual growth by providing experiences that will meet each child's individual needs within the community of Agawam. It is the initial step toward the achievement of long range goals in the child's education as developed in the curriculum of the school system. This kindergarten experience encompasses all subject areas. In the Agawam program children will be exposed to concrete and manipulative experiences so that they may discover, explore, and relate to the work about them.

The kindergarten will provide for total growth of each child in the following ways:

  1. Provide an emotional climate which will help the child develop a positive self-concept.
  2. Help the child to establish workable relationships with people.
  3. Enable him/her to develop positive social habits.
  4. Foster development of large and small muscles.
  5. Promote good health habits.
  6. Encourage language development.
  7. Establish an initial interest in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
  8. Foster the enjoyment of art, music, and literature.

The overall intent of the kindergarten curriculum will be to ensure readiness rather than mastery.
