NAMING, RENAMING, OR ALTERING FACILITIES

A name with educational significance or inspiration shall be considered.  The school committee also feels that it is appropriate to name or rename schools for physical locations; geographical areas; distinguished local, state, and national leaders whose names will lend dignity and stature to the school.

Proposed names and/or changes must be presented to the entire school committee in the form of a resolution that must be offered by a committee member or sponsored by a committee member on behalf of individuals or groups.  Included in the resolution shall be the following rationale:

·        Present name of school

·        Recommended name for school

·        Reasoning for name suggestion

·        Contributions to the schools or community by suggested person for whom the school is to be named

·        Sponsor

The school committee will consider a request from school and community groups to name a portion of a building or a specific area on the campus for a person, provided the proposed name has special significance, and/or the person has made an outstanding contribution to the school or the school system.  The group making the request must agree to provide appropriate recognition such as a plaque, portrait, or marker for the school.
